A Timeless Journey to Paxos: November Bliss

Introduction:

There’s a place in the world where the sun shines brighter, the olive groves stretch endlessly, and the sea shimmers in a surreal shade of blue. It’s a place accessible only by boat from nearby Corfu, and it’s called Paxos. This little-known Greek island has a special place in my heart, as I first visited as a child, and its allure has kept my family coming back year after year. I recently embarked on another adventure to Paxos in November 2023, and here’s why this unspoiled paradise continues to captivate us.

Geography and Location:

Paxos is a gem in the Ionian Sea, just seven miles long and three miles wide. Its size makes it easy to explore, and its seclusion adds to its charm. The island’s rugged west coast boasts dramatic cliffs and choppier waters, perfect for intrepid explorers. In contrast, the pebbly coves on the east side provide a serene escape.

History and Culture:

Paxos carries the echoes of Venetian, French, and British influences, evident in its architecture and traditions. The main towns, Gaios, Loggos, and Lakka, are rich in history and culture of Paxos. Each one offers a unique experience and a glimpse into the island’s heritage.

Natural Beauty:

Even in November, Paxos retains its natural allure. Olive groves drenched in autumnal hues create a mesmerizing landscape. The island’s hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and pristine beaches make it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Where to Stay: Glyfada Beach Villas & Restaurant

During my stay on Paxos, I had the pleasure of experiencing the tranquility of Glyfada Beach Villas. Set amidst olive groves, these secluded Paxos villas provide the perfect escape. Each morning, I woke up to the sound of the sea, and the picturesque Glyfada beach was just a stone’s throw away. The on-site restaurant is a culinary delight, offering traditional Greek fare that tantalizes the taste buds.

Where to Eat:

Dal Pescatore, Gaois: Located in Paxos’s main town, Dal Pescatore is the ideal place to savor speciality fish dishes. Their mixed starters offer a delightful array of flavors.

Taverna Bouloukos: Tucked away from Levrechio beach, Bouloukos serves up authentic Greek cuisine in an idyllic setting. Their calamari, fried zucchini, and taramasalata are a culinary revelation.

Vassilis, Loggos: Vassilis stands out with its refined menu and elegant presentation. The grilled octopus on fava bean puree and the inventive squid and mango salad are personal favorites.

Where to Drink:

Erimitis Bar and Restaurant: Perched on a clifftop, Erimitis is the “Sunset Bar” known for breathtaking views during the golden hour. Sipping a cocktail as the sun sets over the ocean is a truly Instagram-worthy experience.

Roxi Bar, Loggos: With a waterfront location that extends over the turquoise sea, Roxi Bar offers a lively atmosphere and delicious daiquiris.

Ben’s Bar, Monodendri: Situated on Monodendri beach, Ben’s Bar is a fashionable hotspot. Lounge on the deck and enjoy Pina Coladas or savor a beachside lunch.

Where to Shop:

Mare, Lakka: Mare’s beach baskets are both pretty and practical, ideal for life back home.

Sarah’s Shop, Loggos: Known as “The Gecko Shop,” Sarah’s offers local ceramics, homewares, and exquisite jewelry.

Where to Explore:

Paxos offers beaches for every temperament. The west side boasts dramatic cliffs and choppier waters for adventurers. Glyfada, Levrechio, Monodendri, Marmari, and Kipiadi are perfect for beach days and serene swims.

However, no visit to Paxos is complete without a boat day. Explore hidden coves, visit the “Blue Caves” with their vivid waters, and enjoy lunch on the nearby island of Antipaxos. You can rent boats from the main towns or catch a tour boat from Gaios.

Paxos in November is a time to relish tranquility and explore the unspoiled beauty of this enchanting island. It’s the ideal time to see Paxos when it’s quieter, to soak in its rich culture, and to create unforgettable memories in a place where time stands still.
